candle-1051963_960_720“I will tell you something about stories. They aren’t just entertainment. Don’t be fooled. They are all we have, you see, all we have to fight off illness and death. You don’t have anything if you don’t have the stories. Their evil is mighty but it can’t stand up to our stories. So they try to destroy the stories let the stories be confused or forgotten. They would like that. They would be happy. Because we would be defenseless then.” –Leslie Marmon Silko, Ceremony (1977)

I am learning to change the narrative. Shift the stories focus and plot a new alignment. An alignment with where I am now, not where I was then. Shifting words, shifts life. Life shifts ever so slightly to reveal a new perspective. The new perspective remembers stories, their origins, their affective lines of connection to heart, soul, and body. Remembering loosens and lets go. Lets go of old aches and pains. Lets go of childish fears. Lets go of false hopes. Hope opens space for new stories to enter. To enter and breathe in the transformative and liberating power of creation. Creating a vision: comforting old selves, holding my own hand, the familiar skin, drying tears, shaking off the last shudder of doubt, I exhale warm breath, gather my strength, and start the ceremony…
